We all know that toddlers can be restless even at the best of times, with a seemingly endless supply of energy. With the current coronavirus situation, keeping your toddler indoors has likely made the task of keeping them busy even more challenging.

Thankfully, we have plenty of ideas for indoor activities that will not only entertain your toddler, but stimulate their minds. Here are ten activities for your toddler to do during isolation.

1. Get building

All you need is creativity and some basic supplies for this activity. With some cardboard, glue and scissors, you can bring your toddler’s imagination to life. Challenge them to build a house, a plane, or anything that comes to mind. After they’ve built it, they can use pencils or pens to bring some colour to their creations.

2. A Pencil and paper

Don’t forget the classics, sometimes all you need for some fun is a pencil and paper. Stimulate your toddler with some creative drawing, practice their vocabulary with a game of hangman, or challenge their thinking with noughts and crosses. The possibilities for what you can do are only limited by your imagination, and your toddler’s.

3. Obstacle course

You can create a small course with household items like pillows, furniture and toys or better yet, let your toddler design their own. You can continue to improve the course and add new challengers, or record times and try to get faster.  This activity can keep your toddler occupied all day and while burning off some of that extra energy.

4. Scavenger hunt

A hunt for hidden treasure can be great fun and entertain your toddler for most of the day. You can grab some toys, or lollies, and hide them around the house, then send your toddler on the hunt. Making a list of what to find and writing some clues can add an extra layer to the game and keep your little one thinking.

5. Board games

Of course, board games are the quintessential indoor activity for kids and adults alike. While it may be a little too early for Monopoly, simply games like connect four, Jenga and plenty more, are great to pass the time with your kids. Best of all, you’re improving their critical thinking skills while having fun.

6. Build a fort

Every kid has built one, and why not? It’s great fun. Couch cushions make for excellent walls, and bed makes for a great floor. You can add some blankets or sheets with supports to help them to create their very own tent city. Just remember to but everything back again!

7. Make some music

Percussion is a very easy way to expose your kids to music from an early age, and buckets or pots make for some great drums as long as you don’t mind the noise. For some added creativity, you can come up with some rhymes together and try to write a song. Music and English lessons all in one entertaining package.

8. Shoot some hoops

All you need for this is a container, and some crushed up paper or balls. Test your toddler’s motor skills and see how well they can air for the target. For some added challenge, you may like to set a time limit for them and try to improve the results. You can even add some more challenge by moving the target further or using a smaller container.

9. Educational games

There’s plenty of websites you can find online for your toddler to play. If you’re unsure about the internet, you can download and print out activity sheets instead. You can make learning fun with word searches, quizzes, map games and spelling bee.

10. Get some air

Just because you’re in isolation, doesn’t mean you have to stay inside all the time. There are plenty of fun games you can play in the backyard or you can take them for a walk around the neighbourhood. The fresh air will be good for both you and your toddler, while helping to break up the monotony of being inside all day.

Conclusion

So, there are ten activities you can do with your toddler at home while in isolation. From stimulating creativity with arts and crafts to improving motor skills and thinking with fun games, the possibilities are almost endless. With a bit of imagination, you can find plenty to not only keep them entertained, but train their minds and burn off energy too.
