How Becoming a Mum Changes You

We hear it a lot, “Once you become a Mum, you will see the world in a whole new light?”. The late nights, the constant crying, the smelly diapers – all for this teeny tiny human you never knew you could love so much. You’ll form this connection, unmatched and insurmountable than any other.

Have you had a baby recently? Are you thinking about having your first child? Wherever you are in that spectrum, we’ve put together a list together to get you excited about this new chapter about your life. Here are four things that change when you become a Mum.

Greater appreciation for Mum

Growing up you’d often complain how annoying your Mum is. Then you grow up and have kids of your own, and it all changes. Suddenly, your Mum is not a wicked witch from the west, and you’re the one calling your kids out for getting naked in public because it’s too hot.

Since taking on this journey of motherhood, you’ve had your fair share of highs and lows, and you finally understand what your Mum meant when she said, “you’ll understand one day when you become a Mum”. Being a Mum is not easy, but now you have greater respect and appreciation for everything your Mum has done for you.

Baby makes you smile

Are you having a bad day? Feeling stuck in the mud? How much better is it when you have a deliciously squishy bundle of joy to hold? Yep, 1000 times better, if you ask me. Remember those cute baby videos you’d come across on Facebook? Now you have your adorable little princess (or prince) to dress up or have dance parties with, whatever you decide!

Babies are just too cute, and it’s scientifically proven too. Their big adorable eyes, blown up heads in proportion to their bodies, squishy cheeks that are as soft as butter, and teeny tiny chins – all designed to steal your attention and care. But hey, with all that cuteness, we’re not complaining.

10 minutes become one hour

What used to take about 10 minutes to get ready, now takes an hour. The hair tugging, crying and pulling of everything you hold, now becomes part of your daily routine. You’re doing your makeup with one hand and breastfeeding your baby with the other.

Grocery shopping is no longer a walk down the aisle to get the essentials, it’s become long strolls picking up nappies, baby food… and all the items your toddler pulled off the shelves in search of the missing treasure. You’ve become a multitasker, juggler, and an innovator, and you applaud yourself for getting in and out of anywhere in under half an hour with your kid.

Romance is dead?

Kids don’t just change your relationship with yourself and your baby, but also your partner. When people say being a Mum is like a full-time job, they don’t joke. It’s a full-time gig, with no breaks. So, finding time alone just for yourself and your partner, especially in the early months, can be like digging up a diamond – rare to find, but precious when you do.

But for all the hard times, comes great times. You’ll get to watch your partner shift into their new role of a parent and the moment when you see them hold the baby for the first time – priceless. Seeing them teach your kid how to ride a bike or how to use the potty, will become the cute and cheesy moments you bond over.

Conclusion

Becoming a Mum is no easy feat. With no time and lots to do, you’ll be under the pump. But you’ll learn, you’ll grow and you’ll make new and wonderful memories. It’ll become the most rewarding and fulfilling role of your life, like eating your mum’s homemade lasagna, but 1000 times better.
